Firefighter Robby Smith was an employee of the City of Champaign as a lieutenant. Firefighter Smith sustained an injury while working for the City of Champaign on February 16, 2018. Firefighter Smith was lifting a heavyset patient on a backboard when the patient’s weight shifted to Firefighter Smith’s side. Firefighter Smith sustained injuries to his low back. Firefighter Smith was diagnosed with a herniated disc at L5-S1 requiring a fusion of his spine. The injury also caused permanent damage to his bladder, for which an electronic interstem device was installed. Firefighter Smith filed for line of duty pension disability benefits.

After a lengthy trial and the evidence presented, Firefighter Smith was awarded his line of duty disability benefits by the pension board. Firefighter Smith received his line of duty benefits dating back to February 16, 2018.
